For wounded military veterans returning home from a grueling tour overseas, you’d think that climbing a mountain is the last thing they’d want to do. But The Heroes Project, a nonprofit working closely to help wounded veterans and their families, is giving seven wounded soldiers the chance to climb the highest mountain peaks in the world.
Actor Dean Winters — whose credits include 30 Rock, Rescue Me, and those witty “Mayhem” commercials — launched a Causes Wish last month to raise money for one of the seven wounded veterans who is looking to embark on a life-altering journey. Dean’s Wish page states, “The funds raised will go toward The Heroes Project’s upcoming Indonesia climb with US Army Retired Sgt. Noah Galloway who lost his left arm above the elbow and left leg above the knee in an IED attack in Yusafiah, Iraq.”
It is The Heroes Project’s intention to instill hope in all of the wounded veterans returning from battle. In 2009, founder Tim Wayne Medvetz started The Heroes Project in order to help wounded warriors climb the world’s highest peaks and find a renewed purpose in their lives. The nonprofit is committed to three initiatives including community service programs and media campaigns to highlight the success of injured military veterans in a civilian world. The third initiative is what made our heads turn. Starting in 2010, The Heroes Projects began funding climbing programs. Dean’s Wish page provides the details: “They are taking seven disabled warriors up the 7 summits and using that footage for a documentary to inspire injured soldiers, marines and veterans when they first wake up in the hospital.”
Whether it’s raising money for summer camps where disabled children can have a safe space to grow or people from around the world coming together to raise money for a Nepalese hospital, a Wish or dedication can empower a small community to create great change. Good luck with your campaign, Dean!
