Communities Comes Together on Causes.com to Remember September 11

Today marks 11 years since the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City. Americans are taking a moment to honor the victims of the attack, their families, and everyone directly affected through community gatherings, tributes, and prayers across the country and abroad. Online, Causes.com users are participating in these tributes by coming together to share their experiences, their stories, and their feelings about the 9/11 attacks through actions found on September 11-specific causes.

Flight 93 Memorial Fund

The Flight 93 National Memorial launched a fundraiser last week with the mission to raise money for the planting of 150,000 trees at the site of the Flight 93 plane crash. Cause leaders Trevor Martin and King Laughlin work for the National Park Foundation and they spoke to us about the importance of this project.

“The memorial is intended to memorialize the passengers and crew, but it is also about providing educational opportunities to a new generation that is less familiar with the story of September 11…That was the idea behind planting trees at the memorial – creating a living memorial and reforesting an area that once was filled with trees. Long term we are going to plant close to 150,000 native trees at Flight 93. This is the largest current tree planting initiative among national parks. Most trees are being planted by volunteers as well. It’s the first time our organization has taken on a project this long.”

Share Your 9/11 Stories

Cause leader David Paine asked his community this year to make a promise to remember and honor September 11 in some way. More than 10,000 people pledged to honor the people who were most affected that day. The pledge also contains almost 700 comments from Causes users who were compelled to share sentiments with the pledge takers. Inspired, David harnessed his community’s enthusiasm and launched a story action asking for members of his cause to share their thoughts about September 11. As of today, 74 people have published words of support and remembrance on the story action.
