Shiloh’s Kitten Corner (& the news)

Posted Aug 25, 2011 by

Hello! My name is Shiloh and I work on the Impact team at Causes.com. Here at Causes we love reading about what’s new in the world of social media, nonprofits, technology, and social good. I live & work In a remote community,Pormpuraaw, which is on the west of the Cape by the Arafura Sea. We’re cut off during the wet and everything has to be flown in or trucked in during the dry. This means food is 4 x more costly than anywhere else. People struggle to feed themselves. Their dogs are, all too often, in a tragic state. My first week here a dog died on my friends lawn from starvation and malnutrition. I’m trying to find a way to save these animals from a slow death from malnutrition and all the related problems that go with it. I’ve taken on five dogs and brought them back to good health, but i have to give them back to the owners as are we are only allowed 2 dogs per household. There is no vet here, so you can’t have your dogs desexed or treated for injuries. The dog and cat I moved here with died in the first 6 months from lack of vet care. We’re too remote for RSPCA. I have a vet who will come up here, but I can’t afford to pay for his flights ($500.00 one way from Cairns). Do you have any ideas how I can save these innocent animals from the suffering they are going through on a daily basis?
